New fire safety laws

Legislation to improve fire safety in non-domestic premises throughout England and Wales came into force on 1 October 2006, concentrating mainly on risk reduction and fire prevention.

With commercial fires including damage to property, loss of business, fines, compensation claims and insurance premiums costing the UK economy £6.5 billion per year it is vital that businesses get their head around new legislation, what it will mean to their firms and how they can comply with these to keep their premises safe from fire risks.

Businesses will see fire certificates being abolished, and existing certificates declared invalid, as the new order focuses on two key components: The "responsible person" and "risk assessment." This means that the "responsible person" for each premise will be required to carry out a "risk assessment" of the risks of fire to anyone who may use the property. The necessary steps must be taken to reduce or remove that risk so that it is as low as possible. Only then should other fire protection measures be put in place.

Fire and Rescue Services will be responsible for enforcing the "order" in their communities, inspecting premises and undertaking audits of the risk assessments carried out by the businesses.

Watch out - for those that don't comply there will be fines and action taken!
