Recycle - The facts.

It makes sense to recycle. Here are some fascinating facts ;

Every Year the average person thows away seven times their own bodyweight in rubbish - 434m tonnes in the UK every year.
In the UK we generate enough rubbish to fill the Royal Albert Hall every 2 hours.
In 2003/4 the UK produced 30.5 million tonnes of waste. Only 17% was collected for Recycling. The remainder ended up in landfill sites, fuelling the production of greenhouse gas methane and contaminating the water table with leachates (liquid from decomposing rubbish). The problem of landfill will be with us for many years to come.
Up to 60% of rubbish could be recycled. The government have set a target that by 2010 30% of our yearly waste in the UK will be recycled.
A Recycled glass bottle would save enough energy to power a computer for 25 minutes. Glass will never decompose. Glass made 3000 years ago is still being unearthed.
A recycled aluminium can saves enough energy to run a TV for 3 hours. If every aluminium drink can sold in the UK was recycled there would be 14 million fewer dustbins buried in landfill sites. £36,000 worth of aluminium is thrown away every year.
A recycled plastic bottle would save enough energy to power a 60 watt lightbulb for 3 hours. 275,000 tonnes of plastic are used each year in the UK. Plastic can take up to 500 years to decompose.
12.5 million tonnes of paper and cardboard are used annually in the UK. It takes 24 trees to make 1 tonne of paper.
